Kappa, The Mythical Japanese Water Demon Displayed - YouTube

I know this is old but im curious if any is aware of sightings outside of japan? Im from Indiana USA and believe ive seen a kapa before. When i was a kid i was alone out walking by our lake, i was on my way back to the house and saw some ripples on the water out of the corner of my eye. I looked left and saw what i have described over the years as a ninja turtle. I know that sounds stupid but its the best way i can describe it. It had green skin, a rounded turtley looking face, black eyes i believe and a human enough hand that it could motion for me to come closer. I stood there frozen for a moment, trying to make sense of what i was looking at. I shook my head "no" to it (in response to its hand gesturing) and very slowly drew up my bb gun on it but did not fire. We sat there for what had to be a few seconds just looking at eachpther, then it plopped below the water and i ran to the house. I've never seen anything like that before or since.Copyright © 2020 HubPages Inc. and respective owners. Other product and company names shown may be trademarks of their respective owners. The name "kappa" means "river child," and it's often called a "water sprite" in English explanations. Both of these give a much cuter impression than is good for your safety. The regional variations went by many different names, including gawappa, kawatarō, suiko, kawappa, kawako, kawaso… There seems to have been a basic east-west difference at one time. The turtle-shell-bearing kappa came from the east and the kawatarō in the west, which is more hairy and monkeylike. By the nineteenth century the reptilian eastern kappa seems to have edged out his western counterpart. Modern depictions of kappa are usually along those lines. We can be glad for this, because somehow the hair on top of everything else is just too creepy. If you want to try to catch a kappa and kill it, your best bet is to use its worst desires against it. So if you bow to it, it is compelled to bow back, and there's the trick. For instance, Japanese kappa like to challenge people to sumo matches, and are very strong on land, so it's bound to be a losing battle. But of course you have to bow before a sumo match, and there you go: the kappa has to bow back, and is rendered powerless when the water in its head dish spills out.

As Michael Dylan Foster puts it, "A yokai that used to represent the violence and unpredictability of the natural world, and especially water, has now literally become a poster child for the effort to stop the sacrifice of nature."Kappa can also be crass and violent. Mischievous by nature, they love to peek up women’s kimonos and loudly pass gas in public. Lakes and rivers where kappa live are often marked with warning signs. Their preferred method of attack is to drown or bite their opponent to death under water. They particularly despise cows and horses, and will attack the animals for no reason at all. They have been known to kidnap or rape swimming women, and to devour humans alive. Usually they go for the anus – in particular a mythical ball of flesh located just inside the anus, called the shirikodama. In the water, there is no escape for anyone who crosses a Kappa.
