Sonos Playbar $594.09 at Amazon See It Pros Smooth overall sound quality. Surprisingly effective low-end response given the lack of a subwoofer. Flexible wireless streaming. Doesn't distort on deep bass at high volumes. Cons Requires wired Ethernet unless you already have a Sonos Bridge. No hardware remote control. Highly processed sound isn't for purists. Sonos, perhaps the most established and recognizable name in wireless home audio, has unveiled its first soundbar speaker—and it's a solid performer. The Sonos Playbar ($699 direct) delivers powerful digital surround sound with its included optical cable, and "wirelessly streams all the music on earth," as the company puts it, using a free companion mobile app. It's more complicated than that, as it turns out, and the system's highly processed audio, while good for movies, isn't for purists. If those caveats are fine with you, the Playbar is a sweet addition to any compact home theater setup, but even then, its high price may give you pause.
Today's TVs have benefited from huge advances in engineering and manufacture, and they look amazing. But they only look amazing; in most cases, the sound they produce is as flat and as thin as the panel itself. It does, though, have a couple of tricks up its sleeves. (One up each sleeve, perhaps, though why our imaginations have seen fit only to add two arms to this anthropomorphised speaker is anyone's guess.)

The Sonos PLAYBAR Wireless Soundbar features a 9-speaker design with angled left and right tweeters. Plus, each speaker is driven by a Class-D amplifier Here's my review of one of the best sounding soundbars on the market, the SONOS PLAYBAR The package includes a paper quick-start guide and CD-ROM that walks you through setting up music sharing and accessing your iTunes library. As a proper Sonos product, the Playbar supports wireless audio streaming, but it's more complex than it appears. Unfortunately, the Playbar only works wirelessly if you already have a Sonos Bridge ($49) or other Sonos device wired into your router. For the Playbar to deliver wireless streaming, it needs to hook into SonosNet 2.0, an AES-encrypted peer-to-peer wireless network. If you don't have a Bridge or other device, you'll need to hook the Playbar up with a cable using the Ethernet port on the back panel. This is probably the biggest barrier to entry here; if you're not already a Sonos customer, you may find that a lower-priced soundbar with Bluetooth streaming is a better value, or that you'd rather spend similar money on a system with an included powered subwoofer and superior audio performance, like the Harman Kardon SB 30( at Amazon) 400 USD. Sonos's other speakers, the Play:3 and the Play:5, are well regarded, and the Playbar could well act as a gateway drug to slowly building a complete wireless multi-room audio system - and if you did, you'd be happy.Given the speakers it has at its disposal, bass performance is pretty impressive too. For relatively small drivers, the Sonos Playbar can pump-out mid-bass tones with surprising authority. However, it fails to deliver low bass and sub-bass sound. The drop-off is pronounced, and means that the Playbar alone isn’t quite enough to do justice to an explosion-packed action movie. A sub-less system also lacks a little warmth compared with a more traditional set-up.The Playbar has only one input, and it's an optical in. The idea is that you mute your TV's own speakers, connect all your consoles and other boxes to your TV using HDMI or whatever you like, and then run a single optical cable from the TV to the Playbar, removing the need for messy input switching on the speaker. The Playbar then learns what volume up, volume down and mute commands your TV remote sends out during the setup process, and listens out for those.
That said, I found that the soundstage felt much bigger when the Playbar was laying its back, firing audio towards the ceiling. The two Play:3s surround speakers don’t add much to the mix when listening to music as it’s very much an all channel scenario. However, in terms of movie playback they can provide true discrete channel surround sound, though in my opinion there is something lost in fidelity, or accuracy of the sound otherwise compared to a true standalone surround system – possibly because of their wireless nature. Sonically the Playbar by itself its relatively fulfilling, but once you have a taste of the Sonos SUB you’ll wonder how you lived without it. In other words, you don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve tried it.Entering the AV world, the PLAYBAR now has a fresh collection of combatants to outdo. Multi-channel audio is still big business and Sonos is keen to highlight that its nine-speaker soundbar (six mid-woofers and three tweeters) can compete with the big guns. As a solo sound source, the PLAYBAR impresses whether watching a movie, TV show or playing a game. Bass is surprisingly deep for a standalone unit and that nine-speaker array makes the centre and stereo channels rich and clear. Crank it up and it's loud, too. Music-wise, the quality is completely dependent on the source file. Streamed FLAC and 320Kbps MP3s sounded composed, but we could unquestionably hear the all-too-familiar crunch of lower-grade radio streams, podcasts and audio files. If you happen to lay the Playbar in front of your TV you’ll want to position it different than you would if mounted on a wall – you’ll lay it on its back such that the 9-speakers fire upwards. Ideally you’ll have the Soundbar positioned at eye level, or just below, but Sonos says that it can work above the TV as well, which is how I had it positioned, facing me.What's more, though ours didn't, your TV might complain with impotent on-screen messages if it gets a remote control command to, say, turn the volume up when as far as it's concerned, its speakers are muted and all audio is being piped out through the optical connection. I think that everything posted was actually very logical. But, consider this, suppose you were to create a awesome post title? I ain’t suggesting your content isn’t good., however what if you added a title that makes people desire more? I mean Sonos Playbar Soundbar Review

The best word we can use to describe the Playbar's sound is 'assured'; it's not just that you never doubt that it will be able to reproduce that bassline, tricky percussion or soaring vocal that's coming up, but that it does it all without strain or even apparent effort. There's no sense that it's trying too hard, no sense that Sonos is masking lack of control at the bottom end with silly, juvenile thumpiness. It just sounds clean, precise, neutral, without sliding clinical soullessness. 1 Your Google Home speaker is getting some fancy new controls 2 AMD threatens to wreck Nvidia’s launch party with monster graphics card release 3 Google Chromecast Ultra 2 release date, price, news and rumors 4 GTA 5 on PC is now free on the Epic Games Store – here's how to download it 5 Best free games 2020: the top free games to download on PC 1 Get incredible deals on Samsung smartphones - but be quick 2 Huge iPhone 12 Max leak just told us the name of all four phones and so much more 3 AMD threatens to wreck Nvidia’s launch party with monster graphics card release 4 Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000, il 4K fluido come non l'avete mai visto 5 GTA 5 on PC is now free on the Epic Games Store – here's how to download it TechRadar is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. While we applaud the cleverness of letting you use your own remote, we did sometimes wish it had a dedicated one, and it caused us to do a bit of wrestling with our Logitech Harmony remote; basically, when you add clever and clever, you sometimes get stupid.
There's an IR repeater on the back of the Playbar - which can be turned off if you prefer - that passes through commands that the sensors on the front receive, so that even if it blocks your TV's own receiver, it's not stopping you controlling it. You can also wall-mount the Playbar using an optional £35 (around $40 / AU$60) adapter; Sonos tells us that sensors let it know which way up it's positioned, and it adjusts the sound to suit.If you have a brace of PLAY:3 speakers, you can wirelessly group them to the PLAYBAR to be used as left and right rear surrounds, which again is ridiculously easy to set up, but bought separately would cost a further £520.All speakers included (Sub, 2x Play:3s and the Playbar) the total price is $1996…before tax. So the argument quickly becomes convenience versus bang for buck. A boxed solution with satellite speakers could cost $1,000, add in a mid-ranged amp $400, and a Sonos connect, and you’re only truthfully saving a few hundred. And that few hundred doesn’t account for convenience (iPhone/Android controllable with music), setup up time (no speaker cord to tangle/mess with), versatility (the Play:3s can be repurposed as needed) and all together simplicity (just plug it in and you’re off to the races). And although one could quickly point to the loss in fidelity in terms of the Sonos wireless ecosystem, which mind you is only perceivable to some, I quickly point you to the fact that nobody does wireless audio better.

This is in part because the Sonos Playbar also lets you replace your TV’s remote with the Sonos app. The Playbar features an IR blaster, letting it transmit the same signals as a remote control, and part of the set-up is telling the Playbar exactly what sort of remote it needs to emulate. Plugging in the Sonos Playbar is delightfully simple, but setting the thing up is a little more involved. For starters, if you’re not going to plug the Playbar directly into the router, you’ll need a Sonos Bridge, which acts as the Playbar’s entry point into your home wireless network. Playbars built-in sensors will automatically orient the audio channels and adjust the EQs for the perfect sound. Although it wants to more-or-less melt into the background of your lounge, the Sonos Playbar is still a good-looking and fantastically well-made speaker. Much like many soundbars of today, the Playbar can be mounted on the wall. It can also be perched in front of a TV, and thanks to an infrared pass through port it can block your set’s sensor and still allow you to still switch channels and inputs. Moreover, you can program any remote to work with the Playbar with a few button presses, allowing you to control volume and muting on the Playbar.Update: If the Sonos Playbar's $699 / £699 / AU$999 RRP is a touch too pricey, the Alexa-enabled Sonos Beam is a slim alternative with some attractive smart home functionality – at a good two-thirds of the cost. Soundbars are a type of speaker that emerged with the proliferation of the flatscreen TV. Much like the TVs that measure no more than an inch or two thick, the soundbar significantly reduces not only setup time thanks to the two plug (power and optical TOSLINK) design, but clutter as speaker cord is negated from the equation. And while very few soundbars can truly replace an individual set of speakers, they’re most certainly an excellent compromise, especially in the face of convenience.Gadget Review works with a variety of eCommerce partners and vendors to help monetize the site’s traffic – instead of advertisers. Hey Ajake, While I agree that there are better sounding wireless speakers (based on spec alone), the Sonos offering is unparalleled in terms of features and simplicity. I’m not aware of any other wireless system that contains its own music server that can be played throughout the home and offers and all in one home theater solution, provided of course you don’t mind not having a sub.But we're saying all this because we're being all professional and objective; what we really want to do is to invite you into a room, play some of your favourite music through the Playbar and point at it, giggling in delight as you too fall in love with cherished artists and albums all over again.
It bucks a number of Sonos trends. It’s not entirely locked into the closed world of Sonos wireless, it can be used as part of a surround set-up and will even plug into your TV. At £699 the Sonos Playbar isn’t the cheapest way to upgrade your sound system, but it isn’t half clever and convenient. The Sonos Playbar is one of the more advanced sound bars and is best used to stream music via The Sonos Playbar connects to the network through an Ethernet cable to stream music from a.. Once fully set-up, your TV and the Sonos Playbar can be fully controlled using an iPhone, iPad or Android device. The Sonos app works well, and intuitively integrates wireless music services like Spotify and Napster, and TV audio. The Sonos interface does lack the presentation gloss of the proprietary apps for Spotify and Napster though. Where their interfaces have improved fairly rapidly over the last year or so, the Sonos app looks much like it always has. And thanks to the closed nature of the Sonos system, you can’t use apps other than Sonos’s.
With music, the Playbar fares just as well in a variety of settings, again, assuming you're not looking for transparent, audiophile-level sound. I tested the Playbar with The Knife's "Silent Shout," our standard bass torture test track, and the Playbar handled it with aplomb, never distorting even as I turned up the unit to beyond-reasonable listening levels. The flip side: The level of actual bass went down as I turned the volume up. At moderate levels, though, Rage Against the Machine's "Fistful of Steel" sounded good, with a gnarling electric bass and a thunderous kick drum, good (if not stellar) amounts of midrange detail, a modestly open high end, and a smooth overall presentation. Even then, though, the DSP-powered compression was always omnipresent.Airplay requires a phone, tablet or computer to playback music, as does any Bluetooth speaker. The phone is the server; it connects to the web, translates the music and beams it to the connected speaker.

And while I have not heard the Moos stuff, just on specs alone it is sure to make the Sonos look pathetic. You can also add a pair of Play:3 speakers to upgrade to a full 5.1 surround sound rig. However, this pricey package will seem ever-so-slightly terrifying to some. One limitation is the unit's digital signal processing circuitry, which begins to intervene rather heavily as you increase the volume. This is not an audio system for purists looking for the most natural sound. On the plus side, there's a Night Mode that evens out dialog and special effects volume in order to boost clarity at lower levels.Like every Sonos product, the Playbar has very limited connections. There are two Ethernet ports, the power socket and the all-important optical input. Sure, you might crave a bit more punch at the bottom end, something you could add with a Sonos Sub that would - eek! - double the cost of the Playbar. Yes, the stereo separation, while remarkably good for a single unit thanks to side-firing speakers, could be better. That would be the thick end of two grand, though, so it's a big single investment. The beauty of the Sonos system, though, is that you don't have to buy it all at once. Buy the Playbar. Add the Sub next year. Perhaps someone will buy you a Play:3 for you at Christmas, and so on.

Bargain shoppers looking for a single speaker solution should look at the Yamaha YAS-101( at Amazon), which doesn't sound as impressive or go quite as loud as the Playbar, and lacks its flexible wireless streaming. But the YAS-101 does a great job on its own with movies and music in smaller rooms, and its hardware remote makes controlling the system easier out of the box. That's assuming you really don't want an extra subwoofer box; if you don't mind one, the Sony HT-CT260 Home Theater Soundbar($340.00 at Amazon) is our current budget Editors' Choice; it delivers more output and also offers Bluetooth wireless streaming, although it's not perfect sonically either. Our favorite high-end soundbar system is the Harman Kardon SB 30, which costs $100 more than the Playbar and lacks wireless streaming, but it sounds much more natural, and also includes a separate powered subwoofer for plenty of tight, crisp bass rumble. Sonos has restocked its certified refurbished sale. While supplies last, you can get a Sonos Play:1 And you can snag the Sonos Playbar for $499. That's $200 less than the recommended retail price The PLAYBAR is just under a metre wide (90cm), and 14cm high and 8.5cm deep. Depending on the size of your TV stand and table, it can fit directly in front or, alternatively, be wall-mounted above or below the TV. Sonos' Wall Mount Kit is sold separately for £35. The PLAYBAR weighs 5.4Kg, is solidly built and luxuriously designed, complimenting the black and aluminium lines of most modern TVs. Whether you think it looks nicer than a pair of stereo speakers and a centre channel running from a dedicated amplifier/AV receiver is a matter of opinion, but it transforms standard TV sound (see below) from tinny to downright chunky.Find the sweet spot for your sized room, however, and it's impressive. However, let's not forget that the SUB costs £599, taking the overall cost to £1198. While the PLAYBAR has a couple of side-firing speakers for a pseudo-surround effect, we didn't find it as encapsulating as other dedicated soundbars, such as the Yamaha YSP-4300. The addition of two PLAY:3 speakers to create Sonos' first ever 5.1 package is welcome and sounds great when Dolby Digital kicks in, but these cost another £260 each taking the overall surround-sound price package to £1718. Admittedly, no other system works like Sonos in terms of streaming flexibility, but you can pick up a decent-sounding 5.1 package for similar bunce. Naturally, the PLAYBAR can be joined to other Sonos 'zones' for simultaneous playback. We had it linked to a couple of PLAY:5's in a relatively large room and, although we noticed a very slight delay, the effect impressed us and our guests. It's great for filling a room of music or, if the big match is on, the sound from a TV source. This helps to explain the Sonos Playbar’s design; with a super-slim profile of under 9cm, the Playbar is designed to sit under your TV, either mounted to the wall or laid flat on a table. And at 90cm wide, it is designed to live happily under TVs of 42-inches and larger. Sonos Playbar review. Can Sonos make soundbars cool?
