The suspension is suitably firm for performance riding without being harsh. G-out bumps get absorbed without the boinginess of excessive rebound – even when cranked over in a high-speed sweeper. Other road imperfections rarely affect the chassis until they get to the larger, sharp-edged size, but even then, the additional shock stroke is appreciated. The Fat Bob’s set-up may even feel a little too aggressive for folks used to traditional cruiser braking, but having good brakes is hardly a fault. You get 31 degrees of lean angle on the right (exhaust) side, and 32 on the left. That’s not the 51 degrees of a Yamaha MT-09 but it’s enough that pegs only touched down once or twice while tearing down the same road that had been a nonstop scrapefest on the Breakout (Leah liked that bike; I did not). Since the Breakout and Fat Bob effectively have the same chassis it seems the better cornering comes as a result of peg placement; the Fat Bob’s pegs are higher and further back. Feet are still forward – this is a cruiser, after all – but not annoyingly so. It is a riding position similar to that found on the Indian Scout Bobber or… ahem… the Ducati XDiavel. The Fat Bob’s almost-straight handlebar will see you leaning more forward than on the latter, while being less scrunched than on the former. All in all, it’s a good mix of comfortable and aggressive. A 306kg (675 lbs) wet weight means the Fat Bob is never going to be described as “flickable” but it handles very well. “Engaging” is perhaps a better adjective to use: with decisive input, the bike holds its lines well.LEAH MISCH: I saved the best bike for last. I realize that often Harley is about form over function. I’m not a fan of having to consciously look down at the tank to see what speed I’m doing, gear I’m in, RPM, distance to an empty fuel tank, or mileage on the tripmeter/odometer. All that information is available on the Bob’s cluster and it’s easy to read when you take the time to look away from the road ahead to check.Before we consider the functional changes, which were a different kind of stretch for the Motor Company, let’s look at how different the Fat Bob is stylistically. The 2018 Fat Bob looks like a superhero version of its former self – perhaps bulking up after being bitten by a radioactive spider. The fat 150/80–16 front and 180/70B16 rear tires look menacing mounted on a pair of 16-inch cast rims which are highlighted by a pair of floating brake rotors. The tires’ tread pattern looks capable of handling any form of pavement, almost as if they were ADV-inspired. Mounted above the inverted cartridge fork is an LED headlight that looks like the eye-slit of a 1950’s robot, ready to shoot laser beams. (Think Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still only boxy.) Beneath the new 3.6 gallon tank that was specifically shaped to show off the top of the engine, the big-twin seems almost outsized for the frame, a powerful appearance that is highlighted by the fat header pipes that arch forward of the crankshaft before swooping back like a mating pair of bronze pythons into the staggered upswept satin-textured dual exhausts.I spoke to a couple of them at the demo ride about the Bob, and while they understand and accept the inevitable change in Harley bikes, they don’t really dig it.

LEAH MISCH: A lighter-weight bike allows for quicker acceleration – which I could feel going up steep inclines – while the remodeled chassis brings improved handling through a 91-percent increase in stiffness. That means a better lean angle and great handling around corners, aspects I used to their fullest potential when trying to keep up with a fellow rider who had been to the Isle of Man TT five times. I fell into a pattern of using engine braking from the finely tuned Milwaukee Eight when coming into corners, along with a tap of rear brake, then a few pulses of the front brakes when hitting the apex of the corner. Then roll out the throttle and line up for the next one. Rear pre-load is easily adjustable with a knob on the right side, just below the thigh (you have to remove the seat to adjust the rear monoshock on most other Softail models), which is convenient if adding luggage or a passenger. The clutch lever is easier to engage – no insane hand workout required for shifting. Thank you, Harley. There are no noticeable issues with heat, but I did learn the hard way that the exhausts’ heat shield won’t protect your rain gear. The swingarm transfers rear wheel movement to the under-seat mono-shock while maintaining the pure, classic lines of a hard tail frame.
